HISTORY of HEIWA SHUZOU

Heiwa Shuzou was founded in 1928. The house and the premises were of Japanese temple “Muryousan Chougannji” originally. The founder was the adopted son for his marriage with the daughter of the temple. He was from the family of Sake brewery, which was his parent’s house. He decided to start the Sake brewing here, and then these premises transferred Sake Brewery. Even now, these premises are sometimes called Chogannji as the vestiges of that age.

After the foundation, this brewery had several times of shut-up crises in the sake brewing for social reasons, as sake brewing business was and is under control of authority. The unstable social conditions droved this brewery to the shut-up end, that lasted for a long time.

HEIWA SHUZOU has been owned by family owners. The succeeding owner presented a petition for re-opening of brewing operation to the authority, where he eagerly expressed his hope of re-opening the brewing operation in “stable and peace” society. His expression was widely accepted and was favorite in everyone’s mind. After the repeating petitions, the authority finally gave him the sanction of re-opening. Heiwa Shuzou("平和酒造)is named after this short story of us, because the words “heiwa(平和)” and “shuzou(酒造)” in Japanese stands for the words “peace” and “brewing.”

The sanction was given, but still the problem was. The brewing facilities could not be ready for re-opening. There was only the way to utilize the rental facilities in adjacent site Wakaura(和歌浦)for a while. In this hard age, the brand “Wakatsuru”(和歌鶴)supported the business of this brewery and was shipped into people’s market here. This brand name also refers to Japanese ancient poem in the Manyo-shu. Some years later, we returned to our own site Mizonokuchi(溝ノ口)to re-start the regular brewing operation.

Having some more years of sub-contractor age under the famous sake blender, the “Wakatsuru” was a rather minor brand in the market.

Heiwa Shuzou retrieved its real operation of Sake business by current owner, who is enthusiastic in the own brands brewed and in the marketing of them, extending its name value and the selling channels. Thanks to the “Gold Label” of Japan’s authorized Sake Tasting Contests in 1989, 1993 and 2005 year awarded in three times, the brand name of Heiwa Shuzou now gets highlighted in sake market. Much Japanese-like and Tasty! Sake with locality of Wakayama! These are our mind in Sake and Ume-shu brewing.
